What’s the best way of getting a new iPhone 3GS that is legally unlocked and sim-free?

I want to buy a new 32GB iPhone 3GS, but because I use my phone in different countries and don’t want to mess around with all the illegal unlocking software, I need one which is legally unlocked and works with different sim cards. Play.com are offering such phones at £900 but there must be cheaper ones out there around the world – does anyone know where or how?

I also read that under British law, you can legally demand that your network (in this case O2) unlock your phone for you – does anyone know if this is true?

Finally if an illegal unlock is the only way to go, how simple and reliable is this?

Cheers!

Your best option is to purchase a Factory Unlocked iPhone 3GS from Play.com (as you said) or http://www.PhoneDevil.com. They both sell iPhones sourced from Italy, which is where most unlocked iPhones on the open market are sourced from. You cannot buy unlocked iPhones in the USA.

I’m not sure if Play.com deliver to any country other than the UK. PhoneDevil.com deliver worldwide though and they’re £50 (about $85) cheaper than Play.

Here’s the direct link to the play.com iPhones. They can be hard to find on the website 🙂 http://tinyurl.com/l9o3hk

About the UK legislation: Although in theory that IS true, I do not know anyone who has successfully got O2 to unlock their iPhone (and believe me i know a lot of people using O2 who have tried!!!). It would also lock again every time you upgraded the firmware
